Adventure Camp 2021

PROGRAM DESCRIPTION

Our camp is inspired by Playwork and Forest School principles. It fosters independent decision-making, practical problem-solving skills, and creativity; skills that children will use for the rest of their lives. Most importantly, at Adventure Camp kids have the opportunity to spend their days simply playing for play’s sake!

Adventure Camp takes place entirely outside in two parks: the Champ des Possibles and Parc Jarry. We only use our indoor spaces in the event of extreme weather.

In the spirit of playwork, we respond to children’s interests while giving them plenty of time and space to play independently with adults in a supporting role. We regularly provide children with loose parts, ensuring they have material to create and tinker with.

Our activities vary greatly depending upon the children’s interests and the weather. A typical day might be spent hiking Mont Royal, playing hide and seek, catching butterflies, building forts, cooling off in the splash pad, all the while inventing games and stories.

In order to maintain this degree of flexibility in our activities, our camp maintains a low child-to-educator ratio (8:1).

INFORMATION FOR 2021

For 2021, we are once again offering a four-day camp week (this time from Monday to Thursday). Due to COVID measures, most of our play equipment must undergo a 3-day quarantine period between groups in addition to our standard disinfection procedures. Our past experience has also shown us that the optimal duration of an adventure camp for most campers and staff is four days. For these reasons, we maintain the camp itself at four days a week and we are offering a full day of after-care on Fridays, allowing families to access more childcare for their children as needed without increasing their contact.

Thanks to the generous support of the Ministry of Families, which has provided us with one-time funding for 2021, we are able to offer free afternoon after-care 3:00 pm to 6:00 pm. The number of spaces is limited and we encourage families whose participation depends on this extra care to register for childcare when they register for camp.

Regular registrations will be open on Monday March 1st at 12:30 pm via Amilia (see button below).

We offer both a bursary fund and a shadow program to make our camp more accessible. If your family would like to participate in either of these programs, please contact us as soon as possible.

What parents have to say about Adventure Camp:

“The laid-back, child-led day lets the kids get a true sentiment of summer fun.”
Response from parent survey

“My child had a great time. I loved seeing her filthy and smiling at the end of the day. To me, it was a sign that she had had a great day.”– Response from parent survey

“This program did wonders for our child’s social and personal skills — we noticed a great improvement in overall behavior and attitude during the weeks she was at ‘Freedom Camp’. It really made us realize how much she needs outside/unstructured play time and we’re going to work to make it more a part of our lives.” – Response from parent survey

“Thank you all so much, my child had a great time and as a parent I thought it was amazing to have the kids exploring without rushing. There’s so much to see all around us if we just slow down and notice! He enjoyed his counselors and being outside and never wanted to leave at the end of the day.” – Eugenia

“My 6 year old has attended the summer camp and Adventure Club at The Lion and The Mouse over the last year and he absolutely LOVES it. I love that he has the freedom to explore and discover the outdoor urban environment where we live in a safe and healthy way. He calls it ‘freedom camp’!  His curiosity is encouraged, his bilingual language skills get some practice and the staff is incredibly engaging with the children.” – Christine
